What is DogStar Weekly?
Every week, DogStar Weekly brings you a complete lesson based on a current topic in science news. The lesson contains one science news story written at a grade 3-4 reading level; follow-up reading comprehension questions, critical thinking questions, and a journal prompt; and a teacher's guide with additional background information on the current science topic and ideas for extension activities. In addition, each week's issue contains a Go Outside feature that can be used as part of an ongoing nature journal or as a standalone activity to help students develop observational skills and learn about patterns in the natural world. We strive for integrating science with the arts, mathematics, language arts, social science, and students' everyday lives.
Can I print and copy the lessons?
Yes! You may print and copy all parts of the lesson for the students in your classroom, including the weekly news story, follow-up reading comprehension questions, and Go Outside activity. The weekly news story, reading questions, and Go Outside activity are formatted for easy printing, so students can work on paper.
Why does the website layout look so simple?
DogStar weekly is designed for younger readers in the elementary grades. It is also useful for older students who have difficulty reading or processing information. A simple format works best for both of these groups of students. Most websites contain a lot of visual distractions that can disrupt students' ability to focus on reading. We use large, easy-to-read font, and a simple background with no sidebar columns or links. This format gives our readers an uncluttered visual environment so that they can concentrate on reading.
Is DogStar Weekly a safe website for children?
Yes. We have designed DogStar Weekly with web safety in mind. Students NEVER enter ANY personal information on our website. DogStar Weekly contains NO banner ads or advertisements of any kind. The students' pages do NOT contain links to outside websites, so students never have to "surf the web" for any part of the lesson. The teacher's guide pages occasionally contain some outside links to reputable institutions (such as NASA) for purposes of providing the teacher with background information.
Does DogStar Weekly contain banner ads or other advertisements?
No. DogStar Weekly contains absolutely no advertisements.
